Vine and Branches
Volume 10, Issue 1
February 2010
“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
SINCE WE LAST WROTE … David (Theological College of Central Africa) …
- welcomed a new student from Angola. Another has come from Burundi and they are both excellent students.
- stepped on a bat in a hospital ward, killing it.
- invited third- and fourth-year students over to our house for a fun evening.
- put pictures of people he quotes or discusses into his course notes: J.I. Packer. Louie Berkhof. An icon of St. Athanasius …
- enjoyed leading a Bible study on I Samuel. She’s finding real gems in there.
- hosted visiting lecturers and missionaries and TCCA board members in our home. Some weeks it has seemed like a guesthouse.
- tried to give healthy beet juice to our dogs but they wouldn’t drink it.
- helps two elderly missionaries who are here at TCCA to help out with our teaching needs.
- with David, mulled over the purchase of a (new to us) used car.
- was saddened by the Colts loss in the Super Bowl.
- wished IU would grant snow days.
- bought a pair of cowboy boots on E-Bay for $7.
- with Mary, put together a package of supplies for her Zambian family.
- discovered that her old dad is still in the Hall of Fame at her school in the Pole Vault.
- plays indoor soccer on a team with people from our church.
- got tired of snow days. Too many.
- joined our church as a communicant member, a joyous day for all of us, but bittersweet as we wished we could be there with her.
- watched the Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament; announcing in Portuguese and English.
- lifts logs in late night weight-lifting sessions with Dad. Curls and presses and sore backs.
- analyzes trades and problems in the Premier League in discourses that sound like a future soccer columnist.
- looks forward to snow days.
- did very well in a swimming gala at her school.
- does English and science homework with mom and math and French homework with dad.
- worked hard (as did John) to prepare for her mid-year exams this month.
- turned 14 years old on 11 February. She first arrived in Zambia at age six.
Terri (wife, mother, homemaker) … Lizzie (Junior, Indiana University) … Mary (Grade 12, Bloomington North High School) … John (Grade 10, Simba International School) … Sarah (Grade 9, Simba International School) … Please PRAY for the Wegeners, serving in Zambia with Mission to the World:
- For good health and vigor so that we can accomplish what God has called us to do.
- For protection and good health for TCCA’s staff and students and their spouses and children so that we can continue to train Christian leaders to serve the church in Zambia.
- And give thanks with us for the fruit of the Spirit that we see evident in our children’s lives. God is faithful and merciful.
The Fragility of Life: This rainy season has been a little odd. The rains in November and December were very heavy, but then it seemed like the faucet turned off. However, the last half of February has been making up for lost time.  This isn’t just a lament. Lots of rain means lots of standing water, prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes. And lots of mosquitoes mean malaria.  David tries to have our yard sprayed with insecticides on a regular basis. No one in our family has had malaria for almost two years. But right now, the guy who sprays our yard can’t find a “non-rainy” afternoon so he can spray.  All of this reminds us of the fragility of life. In our church, the man who leads in worship will usually begin by thanking God that we have made it through another week.  One of our lecturers at TCCA recently came down with cerebral malaria, a particularly severe type that often kills very quickly if the proper drugs are not given. When I wheeled him into the ward, Francois didn’t even know who I was and couldn’t speak. Fortunately, he got the quinine in time and appears on track for a full recovery.  But this has sobered us. Life doesn’t merely seem more fragile here; life is more fragile in Zambia. Please thank God with us for the good health with which He has blessed us.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!! 2009 was a difficult year for many churches and missionaries. We’re grateful to our God and to you that our support account is very healthy. It was down early in the year and several churches had to drop our support. But by the end of the year, things had turned around. With much gratitude, David and Terri, Lizzie, Mary, John and Sarah.
